The Holy Province of Trimbakshwar

The monks and sages of Vaishmona religion bath on the bank of Godwari in Panchawati holified by the stay of Shri Ramchandra.


There are two stories perceived in the Puranas about the Simhastha Kumbah Mela. What is the Kumbh Mela in fact and why it is organized at only four Places in India? The elaborated description has been given in the further stories in different contents.

 

Kumbha Mela

 

In the Satya yuga (in the ancient time) the Gods and demons had together churned the ocean. By churning the ocean the Gods and demons received 14 Jewels.

 

These jewels are thus described:—


(1) Shri Laxmi ji,
(2) Kaustubh Mani,
(3) The Parijat Flower,
(4) Varuna (Sura),
(5) Dhanvan-Dhanvantari,
(6) Moon,
(7) Garal (The Halahal tarini)
(8) The Pushkar Viman (the aeroplane),
(9) The Elephant Eravat,
(10) The Panchajanya Shankh (the conch),
(11) Shyam Karma Jashna,
(12) The Cow Kamdhenu,
(13) Nector,
(14) Rambha Apsara (the heavenly beautiful woman).

 

By churning of the ocean when the urn containing nectar came out, the Gods fell into worry. The Gods thought that if the demons take the nectar, they will live forever and terrify and cause torment to the Gods and human. This the Gods asked to Jayant, son of the God Indra to take the urn and run away through the way of the space. In order to get the urn containing nectar back, the demons fought terribly with the Gods for 12 days. During the period of fight some drops of the nectar fell down on to the Earth. These drops of urn fell on Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Shri Trimbakeshwar. Seaming these drops from the demons was very much necessary for the Gods.


Then the Sun, the Moon and the Jupiter together protected these drops. The Moon protected them from falling; the Sun protected from breaking of the urn and the Jupiter protected the drops from the Possession of the demons. This is why whenever the Sun and the Moon entered into the zodiac Aquarius the Kumbah Mela falls (is organized). The Gods and the demons fought for 12 years of human. According to this after every 12 years of time, the Kumbh Mela falls at the four holy places. During the time of fight between the Gods and demons, another eight drops of nectar fell onto the Devlok (the world of Gods) and four drops fell onto the Earth. Thus on the Earth fall four Kumbh Melas and in the Heaven falls 12 Kumbh Melas.

 

The Story of the Kumbh Mela according to the Padma Purana

Once all the pilgrimage places got together and approached to the God of the Gods shankarji with a pledge that they had gone to the world of death (Mrityulok) and had washed all the sins of human. Because of washing sins they all had become spoiled and dirty. And they said that now they did not have any power to wash more sins. Thus they (all the pilgrimage place) asked for the alternative to get rid of this condition.

 

On this the God Shankarji said-"All of you go to the Shri Trimbakeshwar holy place when the Jupiter is in the zodiac of Leo. There, you go to Shri Trimbakeshwar and live together with Shri Gangaji and Godawari for one year. Within this duration we all Gods in the form of the sages will come in there and will bathe in Shri Ganga-Godawari and take away all your sins. Thus you will be free from the burden of sins.

 

The nectar had been protected by the Moon from falling, by the sun from breaking the urn and by the Jupiter from the possession of the demons. Thus the Saturn had protected the nectar because of the fear of Indra.

 

Thus the Kumbh Mela is organized at Haridwar, Ujjain, Prayag raj and Shri Trimbakeshwar.

 

(1) When the Jupiter and the Sun enter into the zodiac of Leo, the Kumbh Mela is organized at the origin place of Shri Trimbakeshwar.
(2) When the Sun enters into the zodiac of Aries and the Jupiter enters into the zodiac Aquarius the Kumbh Mela is organised at haridwar.
(3) When the Jupiter enters into the zodiac Scorpio and the Sun into the zodiac of Capricorn the Kumbh Mela is organized at Pryagraj.
(4) When the Jupiter and the Sun enters into the zodiac Scorpion the Kumbh Mela is organized at Ujjain.


The fruit of the Godawari bath during the Kumbh Mela is infinitely beneficial. Supporting this fact there are many examples in the Puranas. The specific setting arrangement which falls during this time of festival is called the Kumbh Mela. On the occasion of the Kumbh Mela, all the Monks and sages come to the Kushavart Pilgrimage place in order to take the holy bath in here. The Kumbh Mela at Shri Trimbakeshwar Nathji has been organized since the Satayuga (the age of Gods).

The Pilgrimage province is known as another three names that are The Thrisandhya area, The Trikantak bank of Gautami and Trimbak. Terrified by the torment of the demon. Tripuasur, all the Gods began to live in here. Thousands of sages during that age lived here.

 

This is the place where Kartikey (Shankarji's second son) did the assertive practice. Also Brihmadev himself did the ascetic practice here and received the divine power and accomplishment to create the entire universe. Shwetraja got liberation here itself. Such the divine place of the Gods of the Gods Shankarji is this. This Jyotirlinga Pilgrimage place is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shankarji where Brihma. Vishnu and Mahesh are placed in the Shivalinga of Shri Trimbakeshwar Nath. This unique and abnormal specialty is found in here only. When the Jupiter enters into the zodiac of Leo, then 33 crore Gods, 999 Nadi Naghansh, 68 great pilgrimage places etc. gather in 12 Jyotirlingas and live together for 12 years. So is mentioned in the Shri Puram.

 

Shri Haridwar and Shri Prayagraj are the Provinces of Shri Vishnu. Ujjain and Shri Trimbakeshware are the provinces of Shankarji. This is why two Kumbh festivals are celebrated in Shri vishnu provinces and two Kumbh festivals are celebrated in the Shiva provinces, Moreover the days of the transit of the Kumbh and Pukar are very significant.

 

This story is also found in the Shiva Puran that the sage Gautam in order to get rid of the sin of the killing of a cow did the ascetic practices and pleased Shankarji. Thus from Shivaji, he was granted Gangaji and then took bath in Gangaji. Thus he got liberation from the sin.

 

After releasing the sage Gautam from the sin of Cow's killing, Gangaji intended to go back to her respective place. At that time all the sages and monks were present over there. All of them prayed and requested befor Gangaji not to return back and stay in there for the welfare of the people in general.

 

Gangaji said—"If all of you sages, monks and Gods stay in here. I agree to stay here." All the Gods, sages and monks and the God Shankarji himself thought a little and said to Gangaji- Whenever the Sun and the Jupiter happen to be in the zodiac of Leo, all of us will come to stay here in you. From that time on the Kumbh Mela has been significance. Because of this reference in the Shiva Purana, Shrui Ramchandraji along with the sage Kashyam had spends and lived for one year in the Kumbh Mela and visited the Kushavart pilgrimage. He had performed worship, donation and rituals. This description is found in the Skand Purana. However Mahanadi, Godawari rivers are fully sacred and holy everywhere, but according to the Brihma Purana. Godawari, at the sight of her origin, is especially beneficial.

 

Based on the Shastras and the Puranas, Guru Shankaracharya, after having deeply thought received the initiation and preached and spread the awareness among the Hindu population for the Hindu religion. It was he who by struggling provided the Kumbh Mela its regional and cultural form and monarchy.

The Skand Puran, the Sahyadi Khand, the Simbasta Mahatmay, the Trimbak Mahatmay, the Brihma Puram, the Padma Puran the Patal Khand, the Ling Purana, the Greatepic of Godawari etc. In all the above mentioned epic books this is well described that the Simbhasta Kumbh has been organized in Trimbakeshwar

 

Mentioning the Kumbh Mela this is said:—

 

The Kumbh festival is organized at four places named Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Godawari (Trimbakeshwar).The found description clears only three names of the ahead of the Kumbha Mela. But the mention of the bank sight of Godawari as the fourth place of the Kumbh Mela arise naturally a sense of doubt within the mind of the reader. The reason of such the doubt is that the bank of Godawari is spread over from the place of its origin to Rajmahendri. This means that from the place of its origin to Rajmahaendri where so ever the Kumbah Mela is organized, is considered to be eq beneficial. Every among there, Trimbakeshwar Nasik, Paithan, Nanded Rajmahendri are considered very much significant. In this case there should not be a dispute over Trimbakeshwar and Nasik. This is thus specified:--


Over the Trimbak Gautam Tat (bank) means over the place of origin of Godawari, Trimbak, and the Kumbha Mela is greatly spiritually beneficial. The special thing is this that when the Jupiter arrives into the zodiac of Leo the greatness and significance of Trimbak increase.

 

The significance of bath and donation during the great festival of the Kumbh Mela, according to the Skand Purana is thus:—


The fruit and merci received by taking bath in Godawari and giving donation is received doubly at the Sangam Sthal (place of confluence of rivers). The same kind of merciful fruit is received four times during the Simbasth. if in between the Simbastha the Jupiter transits, this merciful fruit is received six times. Near by the Sangam Sthal is the Kushavart pilgrimage place where the sage Gautam prevented Godawari from flowing. In that duration of time on the occasion of the great festival of the Kumbh Mela are performed rituals and are done the divine customs like Head shave, organization with Rudra, rituals after one's death, the great worship of Shri Tryambakeshwar, adornment and ornamentation with the Rudras, worship of Ganga, donation of cows, donation of the golden idol of the Simbarud, donation of the golden pot.

 

The details of the places of stay of the sages and monks who take bath during the festival of the Kumbh is an followings :—

• Mahanirbani Akhada:— Establishment .—November Shukh 10,805 Vikram San Center:— State of Bihar (Near b Baidhnath Dham) Spiritual Master:—Kapil Mahamuni Branches :—Tryambak, Prayagraj, Omkar, Kashi and Ujjain.
•Anand Akhada:— Establishment:— 912 A.D. Spiritaual Master:—Aumi Branches:—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Trimbak. •Niranjini Akhada:— Establishmmt:—1202 A.D. Spiritual Master:—Shri Kartik Soami. Center:—Prayagraj Branches:—Trimbak, Haridwar, Kashi Ukar, Ujjain and Udepur Kuchh Mandavi.

•Big Udasin Akhada :— Establishment:—1844 A.D. Branches :—Mandani, Kankhal, Sahibganj, Multanganj, Trimbak, Hyderabad, Guntoor, Asarganj, Pratapgarh, Banaras, Balia, Vrindavan, Sudharas, Kurukshetra, Ujjain, Ramdhuni, Dayalpur, Sandeela, Hardoi.
•New Udasin Akhada :— Establishment:—1902 A.D. Branches :—Hridwar, Prayagraj, Gaya, Kashi, Trimbak.


Likewise Yoginath, Lukad, Sukad and Gudhad Akhadas and their places are also in Trimbak. In Nasik, the Vaishnav religious, People bath in Ramkund. In A.D. 1746, sages fought with each other and from then onwards only the Vaishnav people would come to bath in Nasik. Later Shri Kusha Bhav Saheb Peshawa reconciled this quarrel and along with them (sages) took bath in the Kushavart Pilgrimage place. From that time onwards the sages take bath in the Kushavart Pilgrimage place peacefully without any tension and dispute.

On October 1,1860, the city court decided that the vaishnav religious Bairagi sages, on the great occasion of the Simhashtha will be given two hours (6 AM to 8 AM) for taking bath preceded by the Digambar sages, However the Vaishnav Sages do not come to Kushavart for bath. All of these sages bath at the Ramkund in Panchawati in Nasik.

 

Thus the superiors of the monastery of the Akhada council of the committee of the devotees for the local Kumbh Mela committee in Haridwar said that according to the views in the Shastras Shri Trimbakeshwar was the place for the festival of the Kumbh. The dates for the Roya Bath are decided and fixed by the Akhada council, Afterwards are decided the governmental Simhastha Kumbh.

 

The fruit that is received by one by taking bath thousands of times in Ganga in the Month of August and crores of times in the Month of February, the same fruit and merci is received by one by taking bath in Shri Kushavart during the Simhasth Kumbah Mela.

 

During the Kumbh Mela one can enjoy liberation and freedom from even such the dire sin of Brihma's assassination by performing donation, chanting and performing sacrifice at Shri Trimbakeshwar.

 

At that time when the Kumbh Mela was organised on the Trimbak bank of Godawari-Mahanadi, the Sun and the Jupiter were in the zodiac of Leo. This is why that is called the Mahakumbh (The great Kumbh).

 

When the Jupiter and the Sun happen to be in the zodiac of Leo then the Amavasya (night of full moon) falls, and the Kumbh Mela is organized at Shri Trimbakeshwar on the place of origin of Godawari on the Earth.

 

During the Kumbh Mela, the baths of the sages go on according to their (sages) designation and siniority. First of the entire Digambar sages take bath. In the Kumbh Mela, in the early morning, 2-3 hours before the Sun rises, the Digambar and the Naga (naked) sages who arrive at the river sight sitting on the elephants and on foot and singing the religious songs the entire why in the procession, take bath. According to the decided schedule only the Digambar and Naga sages take bath in the Kushavart pilgrimage place very first. In their procession are elephants, horses, musical instruments and conches. They continuously play them conches. On the elephant is a beautifully designed and well handcrafted with gold and silver silky embridened clothes. On this particular elephant within the embroidered curtains of the gold and silver sit the chief of the sages. The procession goes ahead very enthusiastically. First of all after the holy in the Kumbh Mela at the Kushavart pilgrimage place the God Shankarji after the worship of the Trimbak Nath return back to his resident. After he takes bath, according to the decided rules other sages and monks of different community and the people in general take bath during the Kumbh Mela and in the other periods related to it the monks reside at Trimbakeshwar.
